The section I choreographed for the group piece
The choreography we created links to the theme of the piece because people who have suffered from traumatic experiences often have DID later in life to help cope with that past trauma. The section I have choreographed with Isabella is representing a bad memory. The memory will be about abuse and neglect which reinforces the idea of past trauma. Our movements are very quick and the arms are sharp and flexed which is to show harshness.
At the beginning of the section, there is a canon starting with the tallest member of the group from the upstage left corner to the smallest in the upstage right corner. One person will be crouching in the top right corner and the canon of movements is meant to show repetitive physical abuse. Throughout the section, there is a lot of negative space which to me could link to the idea of neglect because that space isn’t being filled with happiness or love.
We found that pathways to get into formations are harder to get there in time due to music time pressure, possible collisions and people having to travel a long way to get where they needed to be. We were able to fix this by swapping people around so it was more efficient for them to get to the place where they needed to be. Time management has been challenging because teaching and learning new choreography takes longer than expected but as a group, we are going to teach choreography quickly so that we can have a longer time to polish.
Hi Sylvia, this is a really good blog post. Just something to think about, how could you prevent these issues (timing and collisions) before you bring your choreography into the studio to teach? This will overall be more efficient
ReplyDeleteHello Sylvia, this blogpost is very good and I like how you went into detail with your section and what the section means according to the stimulus. Something to consider is maybe looking at other choreographers and researching into different ones and see if those help you develop material for the future. Well done, though amazing work.
ReplyDeleteGood job Sylvia. To give your choreographic process more depth, think about possibly using a choreographer to inspire you in your choreographic style and see how using their choreographic methods affect your work.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be great if you could include a video of the section you have created to illustrate what you have spoken about within the blog. I think that you have explained really well how what you have choreographed links to the idea however it would be great to have a little more information about how you created your movement, what process have you used and was it inspired by any chorepgraphers.
