Choreography Stimulus

In one of the very first choreography lessons, our teacher introduced us to choreography by giving us an image and asking us what our first thoughts about the image were. We were then asked how we could then tell the audience through our movement what the image was. This was very beneficial because we can take that advice and the feedback that we were given to help us with our group choreography piece. We chose the stimulus for our group piece by voting out of four images which we, as an individual liked the most. We then agreed that the brain image would be best to choreograph for because there were so many different interpretations. It was very interesting to hear people’s suggestions for the theme such as using technology to hide emotions and how social media can lead to mental health problems.  To me, the stimulus is exposing mental health for not just affecting you on the inside mentally but also on the outside physically. As a group, we chose mental health and split personality disorder (DID) as the theme for our choreography. We researched different types of DID and some examples are amnesia, depersonalization, gender confusion and identity confusion. We then found a piece of music we liked because it suddenly changes dynamics and highlights the changes in emotions. After we chose the music we sectioned each part of the music where the music changes and analyzed the sections as to what they could represent. Each person has now taken responsibility for a part in the music, I chose the part in the music where there is a change in chords to represent a bad memory. The message we are trying to portray is that awareness needs to be raised for mental health as well as the psychological difficulties that someone with DID has to go through with everyday life.

  1. Hi Sylvia, I really liked this blog I think it was really well thought out and the timeline was really good, something to think about going forward is maybe researching into DID idea as it helps us understand what it is for someone who may not know what it is
But other than that well done

  2. Hi sylvia. This blog post is great. Maybe think about how you will present DID and this idea of DID so that the audience will get a clearer idea

  3. Hello Sylvia. Great job with this blog post. It was clearly though about when writing it up. For further improvement consider doing some research on DID and how you will portray that image to the audience. Well done.

  4. Good work, I think you have explained the process that you went through in order to choose the stimulus and how you developed that idea as a class really well. I think it would be good if you could go into more detail regarding the research you have undertaken and make sure that you have cited this in text and referenced at the end of the blog post.

  5. Hi Sylvia, well done on your first blog post, I really like how you talked about the process in detail. Maybe for next time you could talk about what the stimulus means to you and what others in the group thought the picture meant. I hope this was useful.
